TRASH TO TREASURE LITERACY ACTIVITIES

What you need to do
T.C. & sign off
* Define
Use at least 4 of the websites to read and define what ‘Eco Art’ and ‘Recycled Art’ are.

As you read EACH WEBSITE you need to:
  • Record the URL (bibliography).
  • Record the key words that the site uses to describe the term.
  • Write a sentence in your own words to summarise how the site describes the term.

When you have read ALL 4 WEBSITES:
  • Highlight any words you have recorded that are common to each term across the different sites.
  • Use all the information to write a definition (2-3 sentences) in your own words as to what ‘eco art’ and ‘recycled art’ are.

*Describe
Choose a particular eco or recycled art example from the websites provided that interests or inspires you.  Read the information and describe it.
Descriptions MUST include:
  • Full sentences in your own words about what it looks, feels, sounds, tastes, sounds like.
  • Evidence of your writing goals e.g. compound sentences (see your Writing book!).

Optional extension: describe the artist who made the piece.

Question
Choose 2 artists from the list provided and read about them (MUST BE DIFFERENT TO THE ARTISTS YOU CHOOSE FOR EXPLAIN).

As you read EACH WEBSITE you need to:
  • Record the URL (bibliography).
  • Record key words and summarise the main information about them.

When you have finished, record 5 questions you would like to ask an eco artist.

Optional Extension: write an email to an artist actually asking your questions (send your draft email to Mrs O for feedback first!).
  • Make sure your email includes your writing next steps!

Explain
Explain the PURPOSE of why Eco/Recycling artists do what they do, i.e. what motivates them and what they hope to achieve through their work.
Choose 3 artists from the list provided and read about them.

As you read EACH WEBSITE you need to:
  • Record the URL (bibliography).
  • Skim and scan to find information about their purpose.
  • Summarise the information about what type of artist they are, why they choose to do this type of art, and what they hope their art will achieve.

When you have 3 ARTIST BIOGRAPHIES, you need to:
  • Highlight any similar reasons artists had for their purpose and what they want to achieve.
  • Use the information to write a definition (2-3 sentences) in your own words as to why eco or recycling artists do what they do and what they want to achieve through their art.

Compare & contrast
Using the information you have found out about Eco and Recycled Art, identify similarities and differences between them i.e. what they have in common or don’t have in common.

You can present your thinking by:
  • Using a Compare and Contrast mind map
  • Using a Venn Diagram
  • Writing an explanation
  • Another idea you have (check with Mrs O first)

Report
Choose a particular eco or recycled art example from the websites provided that interests or inspires you (MUST BE DIFFERENT TO THE DESCRIPTION ART PIECE YOU CHOSE).  Research this exhibit or installation more so you can write a report about it.

It MUST include:
  • Full sentences in your own words about who, when, why, where, when, how and what.
  • A personal statement at the end about why this particular piece of art excites, interests or inspires you.

Summarise
Choose a text with an art, ecological or recycling focus from one of the Journals provided (appropriate texts are sticky noted).

After reading it twice, you need to:
  • Choose 5 words that were tricky or new and write down the meanings of these using a dictionary.
  • For each paragraph of the text, write a sentence that summarises the main point of the paragraph.
  • Evaluate the text: what did you think about the text and why did you think it (you MUST give reasons).
